Andre Onana has explained why he declined to take David de Gea’s number one shirt at Manchester United.
De Gea left the Premier League giants this summer, freeing up the number one shirt for whoever replaces him.
Onana, though, chose the unique No.24 shirt when he arrived at Old Trafford from Inter Milan last week.
After joining Manchester United for £47 million, Onana became the world’s third-most expensive goalkeeper.
While many anticipated him to swiftly switch to the famed No.1, the Cameroonian chose to stick with the No.24, which he previously wore at Ajax and Inter.
Onana has recently clarified that his shirt choice is a tribute to his birth date – 2/4, April 2nd.
“I just like that number, and it’s my birthday, my birth date.”
“So it’s great for me, and I like this shirt.” “With this number, we’ve accomplished a lot, and I hope that trend continues,” he told MUTV.
