Reno Omokri, a controversial socio-political analyst and former presidential assistant, has responded to the outcry over the increase in student fees at the University of Lagos (UNILAG).
Remember that the administration of UNILAG raised the fees for undergraduate students at the university.
This was said in a statement issued by the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, UNILAG branch, on July 20, 2023, following a meeting with top management staff.
Students at the college formerly paid N19,000, but the administration has set new tuition at N190,250 for students studying medicine, and N140,250 for degrees requiring laboratory and studio work.
In response to the increase, Omokri stated that, despite the adjustments in tuition, Nigerian education remains affordable when compared to other countries.
He claimed that the country is not as bad as its residents portray it to be.
He encouraged individuals who were dissatisfied with the changes to become illiterate.
“Please fact-check me,” he posted on Twitter.
“The average tuition at Nigerian public universities is 50,000 Naira ($65).”
“The average tuition at Ghanaian public universities is GHS17,145 ($1503).”
“The average tuition fee at a British public university is £9,250 ($11,900).
“The average tuition fee at a public university in Europe is €10,000, or $11,128.”
“The average tuition at public universities in the United States is $10,400.”
“Yet you are here saying ‘Nigeria is finished,’ ‘Nigeria is useless,’ because tuition prices at one university increased from $19,000 to 190,250?
“The minimum wage in Ghana is GHS446 per month, or $40.” Nonetheless, Ghanaians pay twenty-five times our tuition.
“Do Ghanaians earn twenty-five times the minimum wage in Nigeria?” Is fuel less expensive in Ghana than in Nigeria? I spent two months in Ghana.
“Believe me when I say you’d do better economically in Nigeria than Ghana.” Is Nigeria as wealthy as the United Kingdom, the United States, or the European Union? Nigeria isn’t such an awful place.
“If you think education is too expensive, consider the cost of illiteracy!”
