Justification for a 400% Fee Hike – UNILAG

On Friday, administrators at Nigeria’s University of Lagos (UNILAG) explained the rationale behind this year’s tuition hike for first-year students.

According to a previous report by Naijaloaded, the school recently implemented a 400% increase in tuition.

The school issued a statement by UNILAG’s Public Relations Officer, Adejoke Alaga-Ibraheem, justifying the increase, saying it is essential due to the current status of the Nigerian economy.

Alaga-Ibraheem stated that there will be changes to the tuition fees for new and returning undergraduate students after the administration consulted with its stakeholders (students, parents/alumni/guardians, staff unions, and others).

A portion of the document read as follows: “The adjustment in fees which will be effective from 1st Semester, 2023/2024 Academic Session, is in view of the prevailing economic realities and the need for the University to be able to meet its obligations to its students, staff, and municipal service providers among others.

“It’s also worth noting that, in recent years, there has been no increase in the University’s required fees.

Management hopes that students and other interested parties would have patience and understanding as it works to provide them with the greatest possible educational experience.
