Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the leading Igbo social and cultural organization, claimed on Sunday that the ongoing instability in the South-East is an attempt to drive a wedge amongst the Igbo people.
Ohanaeze is requesting that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu establish a state of emergency due to the sit-at-home order issued by Indigenous People of Biafra leader Simon Ekpa, who is headquartered in Finland. This order has been the catalyst for a number of recent violent attacks in the region.
Ohanaeze claimed that declaring a state of emergency will force regional governors to take a breath and work together to end the disturbance.
Speaking with Daily Post, Ohanaeze Secretary-General Okechukwu Isiguzoro said that the organization would not stand by as Ekpa destroyed economic activity in the Southeast.
Isiguzoro further claimed that former Anambra Governor Peter Obi had failed to protest the order to stay indoors.
“Desperate times call for drastic measures. We must stress again that Ohanaeze will not stand idly by when criminals wreck business in the Southeast.
A state of emergency should be established in the area where the sit-in is taking place if at all possible. This is what Tinubu would do to get the governors of the Southeast to take notice and work together to solve the issue for good.
Igbos are not prepared to fight what Ekpa has termed to be a second Biafra War. Igbos back Tinubu and will help put down the insurrection with him.
Why Peter Obi and the others aren’t talking suggests that Ekpa’s move is an attempt to split the Igbo people. As the president’s supporters, we certainly hope this is not a plot against him.
