The Nigerian Army on Wednesday ruled out amnesty for bandits terrorizing the country’s North West area.
The army urged governors in the region to give troops free reign to eliminate all criminal groups, adding that the subject of amnesty had created an opportunity for bandits to regroup and reorganize.
Taoreed Lagbaja, Chief of Army Staff, ordered the offenders to leave the country immediately while hosting Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, at Army Headquarters in Abuja.
He claimed that if they sought to run, they would be constantly tracked and banned from entering other parts of the country.
“Your Excellency, I believe we should reconsider this amnesty program,” stated the Major General. The criminal elements have shown to be unrepentant. As a result, the question of amnesty has provided an opportunity for them to regroup, reorganize, and launch attacks.”
Remember that the former governor of the state, Sani Yerima, advocated for bandits to be granted amnesty.
He has asked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to engage with terror gangs operating in Zamfara and other regions of Nigeria’s Northwest.
Yerima compared the proposed dialogue to what former President Umar Yar’Adua’s administration did with insurgents in the Niger Delta, which resulted in the amnesty program.
