Francis Nwifuru, the governor of Ebonyi State, has approved an increase in employee wages as a countermeasure to the Federal Government’s elimination of gasoline subsidies.
The announcement was made on Friday during a press conference in Abakaliki by Jude Okpor, the State’s Commissioner for Information and Orientation. Jude Okpor said the decision was made as part of the decisions made during the State Executive Council meeting on Thursday, which was presided over by the Governor.
He said that the State’s officials had approved an immediate N10,000 raise for every employee.
The Exco discussed and highlighted the topic of worker pay. To mitigate the impact of the loss of gasoline subsidies, the Executive Council, chaired by His Excellency the Chairman of Council, approved the addition of N10,000 to the salaries of all state employees.
“His Excellency also directed SSG, Professor Grace Umezuruike, to investigate the state university’s (EBSU) financial situation in order to establish how much subvention should be increased for the institution. In order to cover the vacancies that have arisen in the services over the years, council also approved the hiring of 1454 Ebonyians into the state public service, according to Okpor.
The commissioner continued, stating that the Executive Council further discussed the state’s water shortage problem and took note of the Governor’s emphasis on the urgency of providing residents with water.
“The state’s water issues came up for discussion. After the discussion, His Excellency the Governor issued a directive to the state’s commissioner for water resources to get water flowing in all of Abakaliki’s streets before the next EXCO meeting. “His Excellency was made to understand the hardship people in the state capital are experiencing due to the problem of water and resolved that it must end,” he continued.
