After its abuse by recreational users, nitrous oxide (laughing gas) has been banned by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), and its chairman and CEO, Mohamed Buba Marwa, has ordered a crackdown on its illegal sale and use to begin immediately.
The NDLEA’s Director of Media and Advocacy, Mr. Femi Babafemi, made this announcement on Tuesday, July 11.
The statement claims that…
Nitric oxide is a colorless gas used to sedate and anesthetize people before to and during minor medical procedures, particularly by dentists and doctors.
Laughing gas, often known as N20, is quickly becoming a popular drug choice among Nigeria’s young people who are looking to get high during parties.
For its euphoric effects, the gas is frequently swallowed after being transferred from its cylinders into balloons.
Analysis of the effects on those who abse the substance led to the decision to crack down on the illegal sale and use of nitrous oxide, which can cause dizziness, headache, lightheadedness, hallucinations, loss of consciousness, disorientation, fainting spells, and/or suffocation from lack of oxygen, among other neurological complications, especially psychiatric symptoms.
For the sake of public health, the Agency has stated that it will not hesitate to use the big stick against anyone involved in the illegal sale or use of nitrous oxide, regardless of their socioeconomic status, until other measures are taken in consultation with other stakeholders, especially the Federal Ministry of Health.
It requests that adults keep an eye out for signs of drug use among their children and warn them about the dangers that abusing drugs can cause to their health.
