The Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo, has declared Aminat Yusuf as the top graduating student in its 40-year history, with a cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 5.0.
Ms Yusuf of the Faculty of Law will get a N500,000 cash prize, according to the institution.
The ceremony will include graduates from the 2020/2021 and 2021/2022 academic sessions, according to LASU Vice Chancellor Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, who announced this in her remarks during a pre-convocation news briefing on Wednesday.
Mrs Olatunji-Bello stated that the university would graduate 10,183 students, with 282 receiving First Class honors in several subjects.
While Ms Yusuf is the top first-class graduate for the 2021/2022 academic session, Feyisayo Lopez from the Department of Physiology, College of Medicine is the best for the 2020/2021 session with a 4.91 CGPA.
The VC stated that, in addition to other events planned for the occasion, the convocation address titled “The Impact of Digitalisation on Higher Education in the Digital Age” will be presented by Sonny Echono, Executive Secretary, Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), on Tuesday, 20 June.
Mrs Olatunji-Bello also revealed that the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Abubakar Rasheed, would chair the convocation lecture, and that diplomas, first degrees, postgraduate diplomas, and master’s degrees would be awarded on June 21.
In addition to the 121 postgraduate students who will be awarded doctorates, she stated in the statement that the university will confer honorary doctorate degrees and an appreciation award on eight eminent Nigerians “who have made contributions to the development of LASU and the nation at large.”
Former governor Babatunde Fashola, the wife of the state governor, Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, and Saheed Elegushi, Oba of Ikate land in Lagos are among the honorees.
Others include former House Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila, former Governor of Ekiti State Kayode Fayemi, Suleiman Ashade, Daniel Olukoya, and Victoria Orelope-Adefulire.
She went on to say that the University Senate has also bestowed “the title of Distinguished Professor on two respected and accomplished academics in the university.”
Dapo Asaju of the Department of Religious and Peace Studies and Babajide Elemo of the Department of Biochemistry are the professors.
Academic advancement
Mrs Olatunji-Bello highlighted some of the university’s recent successes, stating that the university was named the best State University in Nigeria by the AD Scientific Index in 2022 and received 96% full accreditation in the 2022 NUC accreditation procedure.
“This is a fulfillment of the administration’s first strategic goal, which is to ensure that all academic and professional programs are and remain accredited by the relevant bodies,” she said.
“We also obtained accreditation from relevant accreditation bodies for professional programs offered at the University.”
