Wednesday night, when Lionel Messi announced he would be joining Inter Miami, Barcelona issued a statement.
The LaLiga winners disclosed that they offered Messi a contract, but he chose to join Major League Soccer (MLS).
The following was included in the statement: “On Monday, June 5, Jorge Messi, the player’s father and agent, informed Club President Joan Laporta of the player’s decision to join Inter Miami, despite having been given a proposal from Barça, taking into account the desire of both FC Barcelona and Lionel Messi for him to once again don the blaugrana.
“President Laporta understood and accepted Messi’s choice to play in a league with less requirements, away from the spotlight and the burden he has been under lately.
“Joan Laporta and Jorge Messi also agreed to collaborate to promote a suitable tribute from Barça supporters to honor a footballer who has been, is, and always will be a beloved of Barça,” the statement continued.
