At Harvey Road, Moore Road Junction, in the Yaba area of the state, armed robbers shot and killed a University of Lagos undergraduate who only went by the name Adekunle.
After boarding a shuttle bus from Yaba to UNILAG with his colleague, Adekunle, it was learned that Opeyemi was robbed of her iPhone 7 plus by a man who was hanging off the rear of the bus.
Angered by the situation, Opeyemi called for help, and Adekunle pursued him in a last-ditch effort to get the phone back from the thief who had jumped off the bus and fled.
It was discovered that one of the thugs believed to be working with the fleeing suspect suddenly appeared and shot the 23-year-old as Adekunle was drawing near the suspect.
An eyewitness, who asked to remain anonymous for security concerns, claimed that Adekunle was shot in the head by the robber’s accomplice and that he died instantly.
“The incident occurred on June 3, around 9 o’clock; what happened was that the deceased boy was shot at close range on the left side of his head and died there and then,” he said. On him was an ATM card with the name Adekunle on it.
Later, we learned from a woman who identified herself as Opeyemi and claimed to be a Business Administration student at UNILAG that she and the deceased, who she knew to be a student at UNILAG, had boarded a shuttle bus from Yaba and were traveling to UNILAG when the deceased was robbed of her iPhone 7 plus by a thief hanging from the back of the bus.
According to her, the dead tried to assist by pursuing the thief, but while doing so, a different group of people emerged, and one of them shot the deceased at close range on the left side of his skull, killing him instantly.
Adekunle, who was dressed in a black top and pants, was visible laying still on the crime scene floor in a photograph that the magazine had in its possession.
On the floor was the blood that poured from his head. Additionally seen in the image were a polybag and his slippers.
According to reports, when police raided the scene of the incident, they removed Adekunle’s body and deposited it at the Mainland Hospital’s morgue.
When contacted, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, the state police public relations officer, stated that the command had launched an investigation to identify the attackers.
“The deceased was a UNILAG student,” he declared. The command has contacted the victim’s relatives and is pursuing the suspects in preparation for a potential arrest. The SCID, Panti, has been given the case for a covert investigation.
Adejoke Alaga-Ibrahim, a UNILAG spokesman, declined to comment on the situation when approached.
She added, “I do not give reactions over the phone; I will like for you to make a formal request; you could send an email to the communicationunit@unilag.edu.ng, or you could come over to the university so that you can speak with the Dean of Student Affairs.”
