On Monday, the Ogun State Election appeal Tribunal, which is based in Isabo, Abeokuta, began hearing the appeal that Ladi Adebutu, a candidate for governor for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), filed against Dapo Abiodun, an aspirant for the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Both the APC and the PDP organized their members to attend the tribunal in support of one another, according to a DailyPost report.
However, political thugs, also known as pankere, invaded the tribunal’s location and attacked perceived adversaries as police officers and other security personnel looked on.
Despite police barricades at both sides of the road leading to the court, the hoodlums were nevertheless able to attack their intended victims.
The police did nothing to apprehend or prevent the political thugs from wreaking mayhem as they wandered around with canes in their hands.
There is nothing we can do; we cannot arrest them, a police officer declared. Ogun is always different in every manner.
A PDP member who was attacked by the thugs claimed that while being pummeled, he lost his phone, money, and other items.
Members of the PDP had left the court grounds as of the time this story was filed in order to avoid more violence.
According to a report, Ogun has developed a worrying pattern whereby opposition members are now regularly attacked at the tribunal following elections.
