The Niger State Police Command has arrested Akinnowonu Damilola Victoria, an internet businesswoman, for allegedly scamming over a hundred people out of N150 million.
The command’s spokesperson, DSP Wasiu Abiodun, revealed this in a statement on Friday, June 2, 2023, saying the suspect tricked her victims into believing her items had been seized by Customs after they placed orders.
“A case of cheating, criminal breach of trust, and internet-related offenses was referred to the Command from Magistrate Court Minna on 22/05/2023 involving one Akinnowonu Damilola Victoria, aged 23yrs of Kolawole Street Tunga, Minna,” according to the statement.
“As soon as the case was referred, Police operatives attached to SCID swung into action, and the suspect was arrested with the assistance of the family. During interrogation, she claimed to have been operating an online business for about a year ago, via a link she discovered on Facebook, by showcasing items such as female clothes, bags, shoes, phones, laptops, and other electronic gadgets.”
“She claimed that by performing this act, she was able to gather a large number of customers online who usually place orders for such items.” She went on to say that because of her customers’ price complaints, she took some orders at a low cost and occasionally used the proceeds to serve other clients.
“As a result of the accumulating orders, she was unable to meet up for other transactions.” Preliminary inquiry found that she tricked her victims into believing that her products had been seized by Customs. She also rented two warehouses in Minna’s Tunga/Kpakungu regions for almost two million naira, which she utilized to further her fraud schemes.
“She admitted that, based on her rough estimates, she owes over a hundred customers approximately 150 million naira.” So far, 72 victims have appeared at SCID Minna, giving police statements about their encounters with the suspect.
“The case is being investigated, as the suspect is being questioned at SCID Minna, and she will be arraigned before the court for prosecution as soon as the investigation is completed.”
