Following the incident that resulted in the arrest and detention of Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti on Monday, the suspect apologized and paid $12,000 to the officer who was assaulted to repair his damaged vehicle on Saturday.
On Monday, reliable sources close to the incident confirmed the news to Punch, adding that the officer had followed Seun Kuti to his Akin Osiyemi residence off Allen Avenue in Ikeja after the musician crashed his car on the Third Mainland bridge.
According to a source, “Seun Kuti was the one who smashed the officer’s vehicle, and the cop followed him to draw his attention to it, but the musician alighted from his car and slapped him.”

“The cop was by himself. He followed Seun Kuti to his home in Ikeja after the altercation, and the musician apologized to the officer and gave him $12,000 to repair his damaged vehicle.
“However, the officer reported the incident at the Area F Police Command in Ikeja, and deposited the 12,000 at the counter while giving a written statement about the incident,” according to another source.
Following a visit to the FCID over the alleged assault, Seun Kuti is currently being held at the State Criminal Investigation Department, popularly known as Panti, in Yaba, Lagos State A lawyer accompanied the musician.

In response to a question about eun’s apology and monetary tip, the Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, said in a phone interview with reporters on Monday that Seun Kuti had apologised to the assaulted officer on Saturday and given him the sum of 12,000 for vehicle repair.
“Although the investigation is still ongoing, your correspondence is correct,” Hundeyin stated. On Saturday, Seun Kuti apologized to the officer and gave him 12,000 to repair his damaged vehicle after the officer followed him to his home in Ikeja following the altercation.

Usman Baba, the Inspector-General of Police, had previously ordered the musician’s arrest.
The IG also ordered a prompt and thorough investigation into the remote and immediate cause(s) of the alleged assault, as well as prosecution of the suspect.
In a social media post obtained by our correspondent on Saturday night, the musician claimed that the police officer in question attempted to murder him and his family.
A musician faces three years in prison.
If found guilty of assaulting the yet-to-be-named police officer, eun Kuti faces three years in prison under Section 356 of the Nigerian Criminal Code Act.
