At a wedding ceremony in Kano, seven people were reported dead and several others were hospitalized after drinking tea suspected to have been prepared with a local leaf known as Zakami.
The incident is said to have occurred on Tuesday in the Sheka area of Kano State’s Kumbotso Local Government Area.
According to the Daily Trust, eyewitnesses reported that the tea affected nearly 50 people, with some still missing.
One of the witnesses, Sanusi Yahaya, who is also the bride’s elder brother, stated that the tea was suspected of being made with drugs other than the local leaf.
Yahaya stated that it had become the norm.
Young people in the area, particularly drug addicts, cook tea during ceremonies and hide beneath it to take drugs.
“They cooked the tea, and they didn’t even know how many and what kinds of drugs were in it, so some had to abandon it.” Some of them, however, insisted on drinking from the tea, claiming that their brains could handle it.
“Two people died after drinking the tea; some have recovered, while others are hospitalized,” he said.
It was discovered that the majority of those who drank the tea and became intoxicated were invited guests who traveled from all over the state to attend the wedding.
According to another eyewitness, Abdullahi Muhammad, seven people had died as of Tuesday.

He stated that some of those hospitalized were not from the area and were simply passing through when they decided to drink from the tea.
“We don’t know the exact number right now, but seven people were confirmed dead this morning.” “Some of them weren’t even invited to the wedding; they just came in disguise to do drugs,” he explained.
The groom, who was said to be on the run with others, could not be reached for comment on the incident.
When contacted, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Abdullahi Haruna, stated that no report of the incident had been received by the command or the Divisional Police Officer in the area.
