Dani Alves of Brazil has had a request to be released from jail on bail denied by a Spanish court as an investigation into an alleged sexual assault continues.
Alves, 40, has been imprisoned since January on suspicion of assaulting a woman in a Barcelona nightclub in December. He claims he has done nothing wrong.
His lawyer offered to surrender both his Brazilian and Spanish passports.
The court denied the request because there was a “high risk” that he would attempt to flee.
According to Catalonia’s High Court of Justice, Alves’ wealth “could allow him to leave Spain at any time.”
In February, he also had a bail request denied.
