Mr. Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s (LP) Presidential Candidate, has denied receiving any letter of apology from the British government regarding his detention by immigration officials at Heathrow Airport in London.
Obi was detained in London for impersonation, according to reports.
On Thursday, rumors began to circulate that the British authorities had apologized.
“We have been receiving enquiries regarding a so-called apology, purportedly issued by the British Government or any of its agencies, to our Principal Mr Peter Obi, in respect of a routine Immigration engagement with him, as he arrived London, for a brief visit, last Friday,” Diran Onifade, Head, Obi-Datti Media, said in a statement on Thursday.
“We would like to state unequivocally that we are not aware of any such apology and have made no statement in that regard.” While we continue to investigate any dubious or political motive on the part of the perpetrators of the identity theft, we have complete faith in the British authorities’ ability to bring the matter to a close,” Onifade said.
He stated that the former Anambra State Governor and the LP/PCC have since moved on from the incident and are now completely focused on the legal processes before the Election Petition Tribunal to recover their mandate, which they believe was overwhelmingly expressed by voters in the February 25 Presidential election.
However, the presidential campaign of Atiku Abubakar’s spokesperson
Daniel Bwala, campaign manager, claims the British government apologized to Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi for his detention at Heathrow Airport.
According to the Campaign Council’s spokesman, Diran Onifade, the LP presidential candidate was later released after being questioned for identity duplication, implying that someone had been impersonating Obi in London.
On Thursday, Bwala claimed on Twitter that the British government had apologized to Obi for illegally serving him with a detention notice.
“The British government apologised to Peter Obi for illegally serving him with a detention notice,” he wrote.
“Can you now add’respek’ to his name?” We are now waiting for the US government to apologize to Tinubu for collecting the forfeited dollars illegally.
